What is a Podiatrist?

A Podiatrist is a highly trained professional in the care of the foot and ankle. Podiatrists are concerned with the examination, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of foot ailments by biomechanical, surgical and other treatment methods.

Podiatrists are often called upon by other physicians and health care professionals for consultation and treatment of foot problems, which can be experienced by everyone from children to seniors. After all, you only have one pair of feet to last a lifetime

Our mission

The Podiatry Association of South Africa is the official, professional body, representing the Podiatry Profession, who is committed to the advancement of-and advocate for the specialised profession of Podiatric Medicine in South Africa; ensuring that Registered Podiatrists act and conduct themselves in a professional, ethical and honourable way for the benefit and health of the public.

To ensure that the Podiatry Profession and Registered Podiatrists are universally recognised as essential providers of foot and ankle care.

  • EDUCATE the public, healthcare bodies and students on the intricate role of Podiatry in a multi-disciplinary healthcare community

Podiatry Association of South Africa Nadia Dembskey
President

Nadia Dembskey

Nadia obtained both her B. Tech. Podiatry (2011) and M. Tech. Podiatry degrees (2019) at the University of Johannesburg, South Africa.

Nadia obtained both her B. Tech. Podiatry (2011) and M. Tech. Podiatry degrees (2019) at the University of Johannesburg, South Africa. With her private practice situated in the southern suburbs of Johannesburg since 2012, she has a passion for all aspects of pain management and is a Member of Pain SA. Other passions include trauma, surgery, wound healing, laser therapy and Diabetology.

She is a published author in the Podiatry field and has been part of the Podiatry Association of South Africa National Executive Committee since 2011 where she first served as Northern Branch Chairperson and later as National Executive Secretary and is the current President of the Association. In 2017 she was one of the first Podiatrists to receive recognition from her peers and obtained Level 3A PASA Accreditation.

Future aspirations include pursuing the development of Podiatry in the trauma and surgical fields in South Africa and enrolling in Post Doctorate studies, starting her PhD.

Stuart Alexander

Stuart J Alexander obtained his Podiatry degree in 1998 and has run a successful private practice in Port Elizabeth for 21 years, with special interest in advanced diabetic foot care, podiatric biomechanics, diagnostic ultrasound and nail surgery.

Stuart J Alexander obtained his Podiatry degree in 1998 and has run a successful private practice in Port Elizabeth for 21 years, with special interest in advanced diabetic foot care, podiatric biomechanics, diagnostic ultrasound and nail surgery. His passion for Podiatry led him to study further and complete his Master of Science in Medicine degree in Sports Science at the University of the Witwatersrand in 2013. In 2018 he was awarded a Fellowship by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow in the Faculty of Podiatric Medicine. An interest in sports medicine drew him into becoming a fully accredited Sports Podiatrist by the South African Sports Medicine Association.

His portfolio as PASA Executive has included the implementation and maintenance of social media forums for the Association, including representing Podiatry on the public forum, Health 24. An avid Podiatry fan, Stuart loves sharing his knowledge and experience by mentoring newly graduated Podiatrists and encouraging them to be excited about their chosen profession.

National Treasurer

Erin Dayaram

Erin Dayaram graduated in 2010 with a Bachelor’s degree of Technology in Podiatry at the University of Johannesburg. She subsequently opened a successful private practice in the south of Gauteng, where she continues to pursue her special interests in biomechanics of the foot and ankle and children’s walking abnormalities.

She subsequently opened a successful private practice in the south of Gauteng, where she continues to pursue her special interests in biomechanics of the foot and ankle and children’s walking abnormalities. In 2011, she was elected National Treasurer of PASA. She was re-elected in 2013 and has agreed to continue in this position further.

During Erin’s terms of office, PASA has undergone a name change, re-branding and taken legal steps to protect the Association’s new logo – to mention a few. Her passion for business aspects has enabled her to successfully drive processes required to retain PASA’s status as NPO, whilst consolidating the Association’s financial matters.

Lucas Breedt

Lucas completed his Bachelor’s degree in Podiatry at the University of Johannesburg in 2016. He currently practices in Centurion, Gauteng within a multidisciplinary team at the W Sport and Wellness Centre.

Lucas completed his Bachelor’s degree in Podiatry at the University of Johannesburg in 2016. He currently practices in Centurion, Gauteng within a multidisciplinary team at the W Sport and Wellness Centre.

Lucas is passionate about biomechanics, sports medicine, clinical diagnostics and pain management. Lucas is a passionate and vibrant Podiatrist who has completed multiple short courses in musculoskeletal imaging, bio-puncture and needles injection therapy.

Lucas aims to develop and improve the profession through clinical research, clinical governance and crucial skills development.

Lauren Brown

Lauren Brown completed a B. Tech. in Podiatry at the University of Johannesburg in 2011 and a holistic wound management course through Eloquent Learning Health in 2012.

Lauren Brown completed a B. Tech. in Podiatry at the University of Johannesburg in 2011 and a holistic wound management course through Eloquent Learning Health in 2012. She has been a member of the Podiatry Association of South Africa since 2007.

Lauren specialises in sports injury diagnosis and management through biomechanical assessment and custom made digital foot orthosis. She also consults on- and treats nail pathologies, skin pathologies, lower limb pain syndromes and diabetic foot management and does shoe prescriptions.

Lauren has been in private practice since 2011 at the Netcare Waterfall City Hospital and became part of the team at the Waterfall Sports Orthopaedic Surgery with Prof Jon Patricios in 2016. As a Podiatrist she strives to further the understanding of a Podiatrist in a multidisciplinary environment that ensures best practice for all patients who suffer from any lower limb pathology. It is her mission to encompass everything a Podiatrist can offer, complimented with the latest technology, thus promoting the profession and providing much needed care for so many patients.

Tommeli Venter

Tommeli J Venter graduated from the University of Johannesburg in 2011 with a Bachelor’s degree in Podiatry.

Tommeli J Venter graduated from the University of Johannesburg in 2011 with a Bachelor’s degree in Podiatry. She always knew that she wanted to help people and found a home in this profession. Tommeli has a practice in Bethlehem, in the beautiful Eastern Free State and assists her patients in the on-going management, diagnosis and treatment of various podiatric pathologies.

Some of her special interests are: Promoting Podiatry, increasing the scope of the profession, improving its standing with other health professionals and educating the public in what Podiatry can do for them. This includes an outreach program – teaching grade 1-3 learners about foot health in and around the Eastern Free State.

Serisha Neerachand

Serisha Neerachand is a qualified Podiatrist and graduated from the University of Johannesburg in 2007.

Serisha Neerachand is a qualified Podiatrist and graduated from the University of Johannesburg in 2007. Having practised in Johannesburg for ten years, she expanding her practice to Kwa-Zulu Natal, where she currently resides.

Serisha specialises in treating patients with diabetes; children; biomechanics as well as giving professional advice to patients who require specific footwear and socks.

Using her state of the art computerised Gait Analysis System, Serisha identifies and corrects gait problems thus ensuring proper offloading for diabetic patients and relief for those who suffer with painful heels and spurs.

Christian Olivier

Christian is a registered Podiatrist and he obtained his Bachelor's degree in 2002. A number of years ago he decided to sell two practices in Johannesburg and move to Cape Town.

Christian is a registered Podiatrist and he obtained his Bachelor's degree in 2002. A number of years ago he decided to sell two practices in Johannesburg and move to Cape Town.

He then established three practices which see a diversity of patients with interesting cases across the full scope of Podiatry. His special interests are: Paediatric Podiatry, sports injuries and nail surgery. He enjoys doing presentations and have done talks for medical professionals and the general public on a variety of relevant Podiatry related subjects.

He offered his services and assistance in the setting up a medical branch with an NPO called Siyakhula – which is situated in the Vrygrond community.
